CLASSIC ROCK SOUNDS OF AC/DC AND WHITESNAKE SET TO SHAKE THE ASSEMBLY

News

Yet another very welcome return to Leamington for tribute band extraordinaire Live/Wire and their explosive tribute to both the Bon Scott and Brian Johnson eras of the mighty AC/DC which hits the Assembly on Friday 25th January.
Both music and staging spot on with these guys and it is very close indeed to the live AC/DC experience (which I have been fortunate to witness half a dozen times) and they usually attract a good crowd so the atmosphere is buzzing and of course the evening closes with the cannons roaring.
This time around it is a double treat as also on the bill Whitesnake UK who promise a trip through Coverdale and co's impressive back catalogue.
A night of high voltage rock and roll, just the thing to beat those January blues.

The pics are a few of my unpublished shots from the Live/Wire's last show at The Assembly in 2017.

2018 - My Live Music Highlights

Photo gallery

What a fab year this has been for me on the live music front with amazingly 3 gigs making my all time top 10, namely The Rolling Stones rocking the The Ricoh with a set list to die for (one off the bucket list for sure), the wonderful Wildwood Kin at The Zephyr Lounge with their gorgeous vocal harmonies and songwriting prowess (so thrilled they are at Cropredy next year) and most recently a magical, pyro filled night at the Birmingham Arena with the mighty Nightwish, the latter and the Stones no photo pass but you can't have it all I suppose!
Other fabulous gigs locally for me this year included corking Assembly shows by Dr. Feelgood (always a magical night when Mr Walwyn brings the doctor for a local visit), Magnum, Fish, Hazel O' Connnor, Canned Heat and last but not least the Black Star Riders where it was such a thrill for the 2nd time ever to be in the photo pit just a foot or so away from the amazing guitarist Scott Gorham, must say support band Myke Gray were fab as well and what a power-packed performance from their guest vocalist Kim Jennett.
At the Zephyr Lounge it was a welcome return for local blues maestro Laurence Jones and a full on New Jersey evening by The Bon Jovi Experience while a little further afield it was a cracking double bill with Europe and King King at the O2 Institute.
Local festival highlights for me included another quality Napton Festival a couple of visits to the Warwick Folk Festival which included two beautiful sets by Kitty Macfarlane and my second visit to the festival everyone should go to once in their life Cropredy, the latter including outstanding sets by legendary Beach Boy Brian Wilson, Kate Rusby with her exquisite vocals and once again my beloved Fish (with his live music retirement on the distant horizon every time I see him in action is precious and this was also the last time I would see him performing music from the iconic Marillion album ‘Clutching At Straws').
Many local artists impressed me on the live front this year including two female vocalists with stunning voices who both get better each time I see them perform Matilda Pratt and Taylor-Louise, and rocking sets by Mara Falls and dirtyjACkDC.
Steve Walwyn's "An Evening With" at The Catalan Restaurant in Warwick was full of amazing stories from his musical life as well as a cracking blues set with local musical friends.
Lastly but certainly not least a very special night for me celebrating my 11 years of gig photography with an exhibition and sale at The Oak House Club in Leamington Spa which thanks to many of you raised over £800 for good causes and I felt honoured and thrilled to have live sets by Kristy Gallacher and Steve Walwyn (with guests Sam Powell and Martin Cure) on the night.
Cutting down a little on the live music coverage from next year but sure a few gigs will entice me back into the fray.
Have a rocking 2019 and keep looking at HML and my web site as I plane to start archiving my gig photos 2008-2018 and show the best of the unpublished along with hopefully a bit of new stuff.
The photos are all from the shows mentioned and many are previously unpublished.

Hope all of you have a wonderful (and of course rocking) 2019.

HAZEL O' CONNOR LIVE AT THE LEAMINGTON ASSEMBLY 2018 - MORE PICS

Photo gallery

Thanks very much to HML's very own Alan Moores for his wonderful review of Hazels recent very special Assembly Breaking Glass themed show which included a selection of my images, I have now had time to sort out more from that fab night and here is a selection.

Merry Christmas to all.

Hazel O'Connor & Breaking Glass film and live performance

Review

The poster lure was that this event was to be "a rare screening of the digitally re-mastered uncut version of the film, followed by an intimate Q&A and live performance of some of the films best loved songs". Well, what better way to spend a dreary Tuesday evening? Even better, I was there with top local photographer, Andrew Lock! Before the proceedings began, Andy regaled me with just a few stories from the hundreds of gigs he's photographed. One in particular stuck in my mind about how he blagged his way to do a backstage interview and get photographed with Nazareth. In a way, it was a common thread throughout the evening.

The film Breaking Glass hit the headlines in 1980 and starred the then little-known Coventry girl Hazel O'Connor alongside Phil Daniels, acclaimed lead actor in Quadrophenia which was released just one year earlier. It is well accepted that Hazel wrote all of the songs for the Breaking Glass, but during the Q&A session she admitted to having lied to get the film part by boasting that she had more songs ready for the film than she really did! In fact, she admitted she had not even written that many before this point. However, Hazel was a huge David Bowie fan and the idea of working with Bowie's legendary music producer, Tony Visconti, justified her blagging. Visconti's idea was for the soundtrack to be a soundscape of electronic music with sax. The resulting album was nominated for a BAFTA but was pipped by The Empire Strikes Back - ironic given that Breaking Glass movie plot was in part about striking back at the empire, albeit the music empire.

One vital omission was the film's big finale. Hazel knew from the film plot about the outfit, a robosuit, and that her character, Kate, by this time had "gone a little bit over the top with her nuttiness". So she had the idea to have a song about man's arrogance and ultimate self-destruction. Basing it on the Book of Genesis' claim that "God created the Earth in 7 days" she came up with the hit song Eighth Day. Hazel was accused by some of nihilism for this song.

Will You was one song that was written before the offer of the movie role, but Hazel thought it was "a bit soppy" and kept it in the "bottom drawer". But when a song was needed for the love scene with Phil Daniels, it seemed to be a fitting choice. After the film release, Hazel went on tour which included 2 nights supporting Iggy Pop at The Music Machine in London. The first night of these turned out to be a low point for Hazel as the audience were only there to see Iggy. Adding to the disappointment, her hero, David Bowie, who had told her that he would come to the gig, hadn't turned up. That night she considered giving up altogether. The next night, still no sign of Bowie and the crowd resumed chanting "get off you silly bitch", she decided to give the "soppy song" its first public airing. During the lengthy sax solo, Hazel confessed that she didn't know what to do and so shuffled across the stage to hide in the darkness of the wings, whereupon she noticed that Bowie had turned up too! His arrival triggered a change in the audience's mood, they became "very loving and arms around each other". This taught Hazel a big lesson, "if you're not going to share what you are as a writer then you should be doing some other job!"

The end of the Q&A flowed seamlessly into the billed live performance with the band playing the intro to These Are The Decadent Days while Hazel raced up from the floor to the stage. In contrast to the punky music in the film, this was quite jazzy with just piano-like keyboards (Sarah Fisher), saxophone (Claire Hirst) and drums (Joshua Blackmore) behind Hazel's vocals. The setlist mainly comprised of Hazel's own compositions, a few from the film (Blackman, Will You, Eighth Day) but the rest subsequent to it, all apart from a lovely cover of Nina Simone's Do What You've Gotta Do, which is her special go-to-song in troubled times. Each song was introduced with an entertaining short story or explanation.

So to answer my own opening question, surely there can't many better ways to spend a Tuesday evening!

Forever - Amen!

STEVE WALWYN - UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL AT THE CATALAN

Review

Wonderful stories from Mr Walwyn prompted by well set questions from our very own Holly Hewitt along with a few from the audience started this special evening which due to the generosity of the man himself in donating all of his fee as well as the proceeds from any of his solo albums sold on the night raised over £400 for the ILEAP charity (a cause very close to Steves heart).
We had numerous tales/anecdotes from his days with The DTs, The Mosquitos, Chevy, Red On Red, Dr. Feelgood and many more and he also told us about his own personal musical heroes and influences.
Names dropped (in Steve's very modest way of course!) included the likes of Brian May, Kate Bush, Eric Clapton, Rory Gallagher and Jeff Beck with my favourite part being the fact that Led Zeppelin legend Robert Plant owes Steve a support set over a game of pool bet a while back and we mean Mr Plant supporting Steve (so looking forward to that one!).
He was very generous in giving us so much info on his amazing musical life but sure there are plenty more gems that will make his proposed book for which I cannot wait.
His passion when he talked about his amazing guitar collection was a joy to behold (understand completely as I sometime get so passionate about my photography, some would say overly so!) and what a privilege that he brought along his famous Plank to show us as it is so treasured it stays safe at home most of the time.
After a short break it was live music time with of course a good dose of blues firstly Steve solo and then performing with guests local musicians and good friends Martin Cure, Sam Powell and a returning Holly.
The music matched the high quality of the talk and I particularly loved the foot-tapping cover of Canned Heats ‘Going Up The Country' and a blast from the past from my 1980's Kellys days with the Red On Red number ‘Sign Of The Times'.
Amazing stories and music to match from not just for me one of the finest blues/r&b/ rock guitarists in the country but also the nicest man in music (I always so it but it is so true) and of course one of our very own - Thanks very much Steve and thanks also to Malcolm, Holly, Sam and Martin.

***Apologies for the grainy photos but did the best I could with the more subtle restaurant lighting and apologies for no shots of Steves guest musicians who were just in too much shadow/darkness to catch in action***
